Athens Mothers’ Center (AMC) is a secular, non-profit, volunteer-run support network for area mothers of young children. Covenant supports AMC by offering meeting and nursery space for the organization. For over 30 years, AMC has been helping local parents practice the ‘it takes a village’ philosophy. Parenting small children can be a terrifically demanding and isolating experience, but AMC helps local families establish community ties so that the joys and challenges of parenthood may be shared. Twice-weekly meetings are convened where members build friendships with each other and discuss parenting issues. Optional childcare is offered during meetings, which allows mothers who need it to spend a little time each week refueling among adults. Off-site activities such as play dates, Book Club, and Moms Night Out are also coordinated. The atmosphere is one of acceptance – AMC welcomes diversity in child rearing practices, parenting philosophies, and political and religious views. AMC membership is community-wide, and mothers of little ones at Covenant are encouraged to attend if they would like to make new friends for themselves and their children. Meetings are on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:30-11:30 in the nursery hall.
