Covenant Presbyterian Church – Athens, GA

Sundays

4Normal Sunday services include worship at 8:30 am and 10:45 am.

Worship services are conducted in the indoor worship center and employ the same scriptural lessons, litanies, prayers, proclamations and service music. Frequent worshippers describe the early service as more contemplative, the later service more celebratory. Sunday school occurs at 9:30 am between the two services so that worshippers at either service may attend. Childcare is available for children aged 5 and under.

Sacraments

This worship includes celebrating the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of each month, as well as on traditional festival days observed throughout the Christian year such as Maundy Thursday and Worldwide Communion Sunday. Baptism into the family of Christ, including Baptism of infants as well as adults, is provided as requested by individual believers and parents of young children.

Scripture

The lectionary for Reformed churches frequently provides the weekly scriptural focus on the written Word of God. The seasons of the Christian year—Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Ordinary Time—are regularly observed. Both traditional as well as special contemporary focuses frequently inform worship—Christ the King Sunday, Older Adults Sunday, Youth Sundays, Easter sunrise and Easter Sunday celebrations, Witness Sunday, Hymn Sing Sunday, Church School Rally Sunday, All Saints’ Sunday, Reformation Sunday, Thanksgiving—and other occasions by request.

Music

Instrumental and vocal music furnished through choirs, ensembles, soloists or cantors, and periodically contemporary praise and concert bands, reflect the blended style of musical accompaniments to worship employed on any given Sunday at Covenant Church.

Children

Covenant provides the gift of childcare for children age 5 years or younger during worship, after the special “Time with the Children.” This time for pastors and children to talk about the worship theme for the day is at the center of the worship experience for worshippers of all ages. Covenant includes children in the whole of worship by using the Good News Bible with pictures as the pew bible and providing a child’s coloring sheet that reflects the day’s order of worship. Children often participate in worship by reading Scripture, leading congregational singing, and carrying the sacramental elements with their families.

Venues

The members and friends of Covenant Presbyterian Church benefit from worship in the indoor worship center, the wooded outdoor amphitheater, youth group meeting rooms, the memorial garden, or the backyard recreation field, not to mention camp and conference or retreat centers.
